Jennifer Egan's Pulitzer winner, has been for the last fortnight, my literary companion on public transport.At home, I rarely make time for myself to read fiction anymore, and when looking for things to do, the quiet spines of my novels barely register a reaction as i move towards the blank whiteness of my computer screen, any thoughts of settling down with the written word are knocked out of the back of my mind by my intent on demolishing the stack of DVDs and ripping through the stack of newspapers.
Similarly, i could occupy myself on the train with my Iphone, reading up on twitter, filling my amazon cart, ebay shopping etc but lately i have set this time apart for my novels.
I'm about a third of the way in A Visit from the Goon Squad, and my enjoyment of the book has grown steadily as the characters flesh out, and i comprehend more. It can be a rather confusing book though, more like a volume of short stories that feature interlinked characters etc, and set over three or four generations. That's ok though because i do love wrestling with epic chronologically crazy stories, (i have a penchant for the Southern/Latin American writers , Marquez, Allende etc)
Anyway point of this long-winded post, is that the Internets have provided again for the soon to be, current, and previous readers of Goon Squad. Some neat visuals and chronology charts for book nerds like myself. It's nowhere near the scope of say LOTR fandom but they definitely come in handy.
P.S. Unsurprisingly, there's already a movie adaptation in the works.
Other things I'm reading at the moment: The Hunger Games, , High Fidelity, , Paddy Clarke Ha ha ha, and Tender is the Night.
