So, it's a new year, clean slate and all that. Did you experience a kick of joy watching the first fireworks shoot up and burst into the sky? Me neither. A tree was in the way. Nevertheless, i had a great night, and whiled away the last shimmering hours of 2011 in the company of some very fine people. :)
Also had a kickass Jan 1st: I was pampered and felt superior to everyone HA, at Field Day. Lovely Laura had cleverly won a VIP double pass and no doubt feeling sorry for me, invited me along! free entry, free drinks, if you like pina coladas..and i do (!)- you know, drinks are particularly good at cooling you down, and when it's a blazing day, you've gotta get some liquids inside of you; the start of the year saw the sun out in full force in the Domain, relentlessly BEATING DOWN on this mass tangle of people, like gross, over-built(?) ripped guys all slick with sweat ugh, packed together moshing to Calvin Harris....it's times like these when you appreciate VIP perks: Sectioned off areas that led to wonderfully cool and shady gardens with real toilets and a delectable bar and phone charging stands and even free Rexona haha .
Watching the performances from elevated VIP platform box about a hundred metres out from the main stage was also NOT BAD AT ALL. I kinda felt like a king just CASUALLLLY surveying his kingdom of boofheads laid out before him, tens of thousands of people stretching out to the stage horizon, bouncing along in this crush to doof doof doof DOOF. Just watching this sea of people surging forward at chorus openings was amazing. The crowd had such a great, euphoric atmosphere during Calvin Harris, and later in the arvo when Gotye came out and did that song... it was a pretty special sight.
BUT OMGOD THE HIGH POINT was catching Young MC. For you PHILISTINES, he is a.) one of THE most acclaimed musicians of the 80s, and b-z.) gee, get some Culture, why don't you.
Young MC is a genius, an unparalleled wordsmith and creator of seminal rap anthems-CLASSICS- ( "Bust a Move" is actually the only one i know, but hell i know it by heart-VERBATIM-, rather embarrassingly, thank you Mr Schuester...) so at first it was kinda sad, really, to see him thirty years after his prime up on stage sporting a shiny bald head, and a pudgy frame squeezed into a NRL Roosters jersey, pandering to a pathetically small audience.
But you know what. His tongue was dexterous (????i don't know...i'll look at a thesaurus) and delivered a stream of damn trippy syllables WITH EASE, SPEEDY EASE. He could totally quit this particular "entertainer" day job and take up racehorse commentary or tutor Miss Minaj or whatever.
Also his 80s hip hop back up dancers were amazing and i jumped around like a loon during 'Bust a Move', OWNING it with ZEAL. So that was the high point to a perfect day. Laura, I can't thank you enough for such a fun start to the year! I don't know how i will repay you yet but..the wheels are turning and cogs are whirring.

Lastly i have to say that i finally understand why rappers dedicate entire songs to the high life, why they let loose a stream of rapid-fire accolades, extolling the virtues of being a V.I.P. It actually IS the best. I am never ever attending a festival for free again without being a VIP. It's just not worth it. ;)
2011 review
2011 review
I've really enjoyed last year, and feel like i've learnt a lot and experienced new settings. For a long time i was out bright and early every weekend, at a uniquely privileged job where i learnt so much from really talented and passionate people about good food and wine, and how these are worthwhile indulgences in life that bring many people a lot of pleasure. I also got paid exceedingly well, which didn't hurt, you know.
That position, was kind of also a springboard into independence- I could afford to indulge in so many interests. I had the real pleasure of going to many new places and seeing/listening to/ soaking in the brilliance and talent of people i admire. famous people. famous, talented people- how rare is that in Kim Kardashian 2012? I can't remember everything but some 2011 highlights include: Phoenix, Jonathan Safran Foer , Noah and the Whale, Kaiser Chiefs, Demetri Martin, Michael Kirby, Annabel Crabb, TV On the Radio

Julian Assange, The Flaming Lips, Conor Oberst and The National. Matt Berninger is criminally attractive for someone in his forties....
Most importantly, i've met so many people; so many good, funny, talented, kind, smart, hard-working, inspiring people; an amazing few of which are now known as great friends.
And with old friends, i feel like i've tightened relationships with people i truly care about, whom i want around in ten years time, people who i learn from and laugh with, who enlighten and enrich my boring boring existence. :)
So.. that's all the mush used up for 2012.
In the next entry, i'll post my New Years resolutions. They're kinda wild.
For instance: 1.) Avoid library fines.
