Memento mori: muscles

Here is a MRI cross-section of leg muscles:

I feel my thighs tensing everytime i look at this picture.  Maybe i should be doing lunges while i type this up.

The elderly, especially, lose muscle mass drastically in their later years as their physical activity declines. And it's not a steady loss in keeping with a decline in fitness or doing rigorous exercise- just being up and about, going for walks, performing mild exercises, keeping the body moving- all of that can go a long way to preserving your health and strength. That having been said though, I remember reading. that for elderly people, even when they're bed-ridden for just only a few weeks, they will find themselves shockingly weaker once they're back up and about, muscles shriveled, forced to shuffle about in a much frailer condition.

SCARY.

Better to stay in kick-ass condition, (i've got to get there first) and be a gun grandma.
